Bit by the Quilting Bug

In January I talked my quilting buddy, Betty, into getting a pattern from the instructor of the first class we took in 2018. The instructor was having another class on how to make an “Irish Chain” quilt. I was able to get the pattern for Betty and I and we had a little retreat at her lake house with high hopes of finishing our quilts in only one weekend!!! We had only one small hiccup; the instructions had an error. We got quite a bit done but had to forgo finishing the quilts until we could talk to our instructor. I ended up buying more material and getting everything together - I have almost finished mine. I need to complete the quilting and binding. This is a picture of it after I basted it.

Irish Chain Quilt

Now to the reason I say I have been bitten by the Quilting Bug is because even though I haven’t finished the Irish Chain Quilt; I have started two more projects. Baby quilts for my stepdaughters two girls which they may not get until they are five years old! Especially since my garden has kept me extremely busy this summer.

Here is a picture of the two baby quilts.

The Hour Glass Quilt

Hour Glass Baby Quilt - I actually took this to a very sweet lady that my mother-in-law knows in Salem, KY to have it quilted after I finished piecing it together and then I did the binding.  I finished this a couple weeks ago.

The Pinwheel Quilt

Pinwheel Baby Quilt - I have not quilted this one yet.  I may try to quilt this one myself - the only way I know is straight line quilting across but I love the little swirls of the hour-glass quilt so I am not sure which I will choose.

I have a couple more quilts in mind that I want to do and of course I have the pattern and some of the material. I have been bitten!

It’s never too late!

It’s never too late to teach and old dog a new trick or so they say! I have always loved to sew and decided to take a class last year; which was actually 4 classes with the end result being a quilt. The name of the quilt pattern is “Tribal Song Quilt”. I talked my buddy Betty into taking it with me and we had so much fun! I met some really nice ladies!

I will admit that making a quilt is not easy. There is a lot of measuring, cutting then ripping and starting over. Oh I forgot to mention ironing - lots of ironing! I think the most stressful part was having a deadline. Each class we had to have something completed on our own by the next class. The instructor would show us what to do. My husband told his mom that “she almost had a nervous breakdown”; mostly because I would wait till the day before to do our assignments. I am tend to procrastinate but I work well under pressure.

Learning how to quilt was an eye opener. I wish I had started it years ago! I have always embroidered and I quilted a small baby quilt by hand for my first child but never quilted anything on this scale.

I have been bitten by the quilting bug!

If there is anything you want to do no matter what age you are do it - It’s never too late!
